I wonder if the international migration to Perth is due to its proxity to Asia. Its closer and the timezone differenc is smaller or non-existent compared to east coast cities.

NSW net outward migration may continue for a long time. Sydney house and unit prices are simply unaffordable for alot of first home buyers. Even rents in Sydney are getting unaffordable.

The WA figures aren’t that surprising. WA is having only limited success at pulling in people from interstate who work in mining-related fields, since it’s generally not hard for those people to find work at home.

And due to Perth’s flaws we are also losing people in other fields (IT, biotechnology, etc.) to Melbourne and Sydney. I only have anecdotal evidence, but I’d expect those factors to roughly cancel each other out.

Tas has always had a higher birthrate, most who grow up and leave don’t come back though. Most recent immigration is sea changers, they don’t like the pulp mill ruining their vineyards and truffieres, which the illiterate stay-at-home do not give a flying about, not if they have their daddies truck to drive. It’s a class thing, Malfroy and his dimwitted cap doffing thugs versus Harry, and Ron and Hermione.

Gross Qld/NSW figures reflect just how many young Qlders are drawn to the bright lights and greater job opportunities in Sydney. They then gradually drift back as life moves on and the harsh realities of mortgages/kids etc kick in. It’s been going on for years.

The extraordinary thing in this graph is the Qld figure. Its not surprising that the net flow figure is positive (the combination of retirement and mining), but it is surprising that the gross flows are so large – more people are leaving Qld than are leaving Vic.
