The Curious Incident of the Drop in the Night Time

Our uplink failed again tonight.

Apparently this is exceedingly rare, but I did notice it took great care to fail when Ken and Nick were in a position to panic :)

I’ll be working on setting up a link failover mechanism to try and prevent these sort of outages in future, but the reason we use this one is simple: it’s free. The alternative is AARNet, which is fast, reliable and (forgive my technical terms here) STUPIDLY HORRIBLY EXPENSIVE, charging 18c per megabyte. That sounds cheap, except Club Troppo does 300Mb-500Mb of traffic every day.

Also, I continue to hate Wordpress. For some reason it had a sudden episode of amnesia and forgot the permalink settings. If you see anything else mysteriously breaking, please tell me so I can bludgeon it back into shape.

Edit: An updated chart shows it came and went a bit.

the fact that the blog has 2/3rds of its normal traffic at 5 am suggests that 2/3 of the traffic is spam and search bots.

Nicholas: that graph is mostly traffic for the colleges at UWA, Troppo is only a small part of it.

    James

I don’t know if you are one of the several Jameses who have commented on CT over the years, or whether you are a newcomer. In any case, if you are likely to stay around, I wonder if you would consider using your surname as well, or its initial, or some other distinguishing identifier.

For reference, that’s James Andrewartha, who is our UCC guru.

The penny’s dropped. You are the esteemed James Andrewartha. In technical threads like this, I guess people will guess from the context. Otherwise, the above applies.

Turns out I was wrong, apparently AARNet has gotten much cheaper – 4c/Mb for incoming traffic only.

Yeah, I noticed that, but I didn’t fret, I just figured, “Troppo’s down again. Whaddaya know.”
