Because city councils are, to a small degree, less about circle-jerking and peacock posturing than student unions.

By what authority do you place council members at a higher level than presidents of a student union? Is there some sort of Debrett's Guide to help us work out the pecking order?

John Flowers (Liberal) is the mayor of Rockdale, Sydney. I'm sure there are many other Liberal mayors around the place. Is there something special about the office of the Mayor of Brisbane that makes it higher office than other positions of Mayor? Seems like the media are reminding everyone how prone they are to reporting rubbish.

I do not understand this phrase, can someone translate it please?

They run for council positions -- in most places called "aldermen", sometimes "councillor".

Scott Farlow is the Liberal Mayor of Strathfield in Sydney.
But yeah, Annabel Crabb should shrug off the comic role she's been thrust into before she becomes the Maureen Dowd of the Canberra press gallery.
