Time’s Nearly Up

Via Dave Bath comes a reminder that the deadline for open submissions to the 2020 kilochat is coming on Wednesday. If you’re not Troppo’s own Nicholas Gruen but still have a few good ideas to throw in the pot, head over to the website and place your ideas on the record.
The representation of Ozblogistan in the AGIMO report on a government blog was pretty terrible, possibly in part because well-known blogs like us in the Terrible Trio didn’t talk about it much. Here’s your chance to redeem our collective honour.

Actually, at least two of the Terrible Trio were well represented, compared to the rest! So LP and CT can be relatively proud.
Here is the resulting report, with the following deserving credit:
* Mr David Bath <– Balneus
* Mr Alan Biggs
* Mr Jacques Chester <– ClubTroppo
* Mr Andrew Donnellan
* Ms Karen Fainges
* Mr Fraser Henderson
* Mr Garth Holmes
* Mr Matthew Links
* Mr Jeremy Malcolm
* Mr Robert Merkel <– Larvatus Prodeo/View from Benambra
* Mr Guy Carvalho for BrandAide Communications
* Ms Sarah Wilson for Consumers’ Telecommunications Network
* Mr Greg Black for education.au limited
Perhaps one of the list (or 3 anonymice) was a catallaxyfiles person? I dunno. And why were 3 government agencies’ submissions not identified??? Hmmmm. There’s an open government issue for you!
(I’d be interested if anyone does calculations as suggested in this, and allocates time at the 2020 gabfest based on how many submissions to inquiries they’ve bother to make in the past.)

The 2020 thingie that’s happening in Canberra is accepting submissions from non-invitees. The deadline is Wednesday. I’m trying to make sure everyone with a bright idea has a go.

Posted on 05-Apr-08 at 2:19 pm | PermalinkI actually went to the Illawarra Ideas Summit today. I do not think enough people attended to create a critical mass (if that is the correct concept). There were 64 submissions and ten submissions were presented today. The meeting confirmed that there are talented and able people in all our communities, which I suspected to be true, but it is good to see in in practice. One of the value of this meeting was we actually saw our two MHR’s taking notes on issues such as the experience of carers, and feeding the constraints they have to deal with, such as budgetary constraints.
We can be too cynical. If the bureaucrats are encouraged to think outside their usual frames of reference the process would have been worthwhile - but that may not happen.
Posted on 05-Apr-08 at 4:15 pm | PermalinkDidn’t even know this was on, Dave - the AGIMO thingy I mean. Obviously 20/20 is very well known. To be fair, the best thing the AGIMO people could have done is just batch email all the blog admins if they were that keen to hear from us.

The problem you had (with the AGIMO thing, which relates to 2020 topic 9) is because information on this stuff is hard to get at. Harder if you are wanting notice of Victorian inquiries.
House News feed has a lot of gumpf, but the Obesity inquiry was announced there.

Most new inquiries are in the Senate feed
http://www.aph.gov.au/senate/rss/new_inquiries.xml
Other Senate feeds available (e.g. newly released reports)
http://www.aph.gov.au/senate/rss/index.htm
Of course, aggregating across all Oz govs, and tagging with keywords (e.g. a considated feed from all govs and agencies by government thesaurus keyword such as “agriculture”, “health”, …) would allow good people such as yourself to be alerted to the topics that you are into, rather than having to travel across zillions of feeds (if indeed the feeds exist).
From your blog and comments at Legal Soapbox, I reckon your contributions would be VERY useful.
Posted on 05-Apr-08 at 8:07 pm | PermalinkThat’s Katy Legal Eagle. This one’s Helen skepticlawyer. They’d both have very useful contributions to make to policy if one assumes that the 2020 exercise is in good faith and likely to be wortwhile (which I doubt severely but live in faint hope).
Posted on 05-Apr-08 at 9:05 pm | PermalinkI think Dave’s referring to the comments LE and I leave on each other’s blogs, Ken. When one or the other of us posts something legal, the other usually sticks their head in. We’re also in fairly regular contact via skype. I don’t think it’s telling tales out of school to let you know that Legal Eagle also got accepted into the Oxford BCL, but became a mum, which meant taking up her place was a wee bit awkward!
Posted on 05-Apr-08 at 11:30 pm | PermalinkI’m sceptical on the whole ‘let’s see what the ppl think’ thing. I’ll wait to see what comes out of 2020 before deciding if it’s all a waste of my money
