Talking about portraits .. I was struck by a lightening bolt as a result of this painting.

I saw what I thought was a terrific great piece of art in a private gallery recently that just zonked me out it was so powerful in the story it was trying to convey. And yet unless it was explained to me I couldn’t see at first. The gallery lady explained what it was supposed to represent and then you just couldn't stop looking at it and looking and it made one feel like you wanted to mortgage the house and kids so you could view it every day. It was several images of a woman on a divided canvas– the artist’s wife - who was going blind. He represented different stages of her illness. It made you wonder if he was being the artist is the sense that he painted it for artist interest or if it was supposed represent his deepest feelings for her as she was losing her sight. And I just looked and looked and was left to wonder.

Here it is here: Found it. By Charles Blackman

“Divided painting” 1963. On the left of the site.

Dunno if it’s true but it was supposed to have been entered in the exhibition that year. You never know if they’re just embellishing the story

That's a nice picture of David Stratton - even though I can't bear David Stratton. As I recall I didn't like the picture when I saw it. Perhaps the larger scale put me off. It's a bit ugly, but in a small frame I like it a lot more. Then again if I looked at the original again I might like it.

Sadly I will not get to see the current Archibald in the flesh. Is it viewable on line? I was struck this year by the yawning disparity between the packers' choice which I think was the Heath Ledger and the judges' choice. I can see a growing problem with 'celebrity' entries and 'mere mortals' though don't the rules say that the subject has to be somehow 'known'.
A last thought that accurs to me every year when director Edmund Capon tries to explain the process. Is this guy on a fixed term contract or until he drops? Nothing against Eddie but he seems to have been there forever.

Maybe, but there seems to be a skylight let into the ceiling of the room, with the roof being on the opposite pitch to what you'd expect if it was an enclosed veranda. Maybe it's not intended to have realistic dimensions at all, just to evoke feelings of place and nostalgia (as it did in you).

It seemed to that in "The Sisters" she's in a verandah that's been enclosed. So to me it the architecture said "Grandma's house". And it's a wonderful picture.
