Yes, welcome Roop. I would of course have posted a welcome message myself if you hadn’t ventured your first TA post while I was still soundly asleep in bed.

I can’t help whinging, however, that the topic of your first substantive post is arguably the most “done to death” subject in the blogosphere, with the possible exception of th History Wars. Nevertheless, your coverage of the issues and quotes seemed admirably extensive, as far as I could tell before the soporific subject matter lulled me back into sleep.

“Roop”? Good to see someone from the real centre stepping up to the plate next to that right-wing Parish cove adam Roop. Ignore his whinges. There is much still to be devined in your opening topic, and I hope it becomes a continuing theme. Indeed, I reckon [*pet theory alert*] Australian opinion and anger is lagging on the issue, in keeping with the traditional conservative habit of our people, but bet the bloc will break.

Did you happen to catch the show on Australia’s cartoonists on the ABC last night? What a great, as well as incredibly talented, bunch of blokes (how come cartoonists are all blokes?). I think Billy Leak is my favourite … but it’s a hard call … Davey Rowe’s a genius … as is Pryor (great depth in his drawings) … and Petty’s a hero … and that Emmerson bloke has a pile of talent … and they all have a lotta guts …

But I digress. All strength to your arm Roop. Long may you drive Ken to whinging.

I agree. Whinging is one of my few remaining pleasures, along with unbearably sanctimonious hypocrisy and farting silently in crowded lifts.

How much Chris? :)

Welcome Roop.

Geoff, against my better judgement, let me respond with a quote from JMK:

… the facts of the existing situation enter, in a sense disproportionately, into the formation of our long-term expectations; our usual practice being to take the existing siutation and to project it into the future, modified only to the extent that we have more or less definite reasons for expecting change.

The fact that the present situation is definite, of course, also disproportionately underpins conservative projections more generally than JMK allowed in this observation about investor’s behaviour. My purely intellectual bet (based on the way that we can readily observe that national perspectives do change in retrospect, as the truth becomes more firmly established and widely acknowledged … indeed, I think they are still looking for most of those people who voted for Nixon …), however, is that when Australians feel safe enough to face the fact that their government lied them into an unnecessary war, it will be a case of very many daggers drawn.

Sorry to interrupt Roop.

As much as I admire and value your intellect Chris, I had something rather more…..negotiable, in mind.

And don’t try to bet yesterday’s salary on it either :-)

speaking of cadman, he was on tv last night, on a news program too, for the first time in as long as i can remember. he was asked for comment re that whole sheriff business:
ALAN CADMAN, LIBERAL MP: I don’t think that’s an accurate depiction of our role.I think we have a role that’s bigger than just a law keeper or a law enforcer.and that was it.

I bet John Howard is shaking in his boots, John Cadman uttering a statement to the media, this could be a leadership challenge.

I wonder if he’ll consider following Ross Cameron’s father and joining the Reverend Nile brigade once his Liberal days are finished.

Mind you I’ve heard Ross was sniffing around his seat just before the last election; he must know the Libs aren’t going to hold on to Parramatta forever. Ross might be able to pick up some of the godbotherer vote up in the Hills, unlike poor Malcolm Turnbull who is now locked in a fierce Vaucluse turf war. I hear its degenerated to Hors D’oeuvres at ten paces.
