And you think Qantas is bad?

Sam “Yobbo” Ward doesn’t think much of Qantas. But he probably should thank his lucky stars that Aeroflot isn’t our national airline:

Two crew members on a domestic Aeroflot flight beat up a passenger who had complained that the flight attendants were drunk, airline spokeswoman Irina Dannenberg said. …

Seeing that the crew were intoxicated and were not fulfilling their duties, Chernopup asked to be served by a sober and competent flight attendant, Ms Dannenberg said.

He was then beaten up by two crew members.

On Russian flights, attendants often have to struggle to keep intoxicated passengers under control.

But on this flight, Ms Dannenberg said flight attendants were so intoxicated that they “behaved improperly” and only began catering to passengers one-and-a-half hours into the four-hour trip.

The daily Izvestia quoted another passenger as saying that half of the food the crew served ended up on the floor, leaving the aisle strewn with debris that passengers had to walk over as they disembarked.

According to the passenger, Chernopup left the plane with a black eye and was promptly sent to a doctor.

I wouldn’t really mind if Qantas food ended up on the floor, because a lot of the cattle class stuff is almost inedible anyway. That’s why I don’t mind travelling Virgin Blue and buying anything I want to eat. But I don’t find the actual standard of service on Qantas as bad as Sam described in his initial post (not now online). Could it be because I’m not usually pissed or aiming to get that way?

The standard of Qantas service would improve measurably if the attendants had a few beers on the trip. They might lighten up a bit.

If you had the nerve to get snooty like this guy did on Qantas, you’d be tied up and charged with air rage.

I’d rather have a good honest fight with the attendants than put up with the passive-aggressive bullshit that you have to sit through now.

In all honesty, I’d be quite happy if Qantas just allowed you to help yourself to the food and drinks. Attendants aren’t really necessary. The problem is they deliberately serve you slowly in order to cut down on food and drink costs, so self-serve wouldn’t be an option for them.

I have a special bottle set aside at home for the day that Qantas goes into liquidation. I’m going to party in front of their offices in St. Georges Terrace like it’s 1999.

On a completely unrelated topic, you can’t buy proper Salty Plums in Canberra, and there’s noone who sells them online in seems.

Stupid country.

You wouldn’t be interested in shipping me a few bags in return for some Vino or something, would you Ken?

Ah, Aeroflot! 20+ years back when the Soviet was still in full force, such experiences were notorious.

A friend in the travel industry recalls being on a flight when a powerful female flight attendant slapped the face of a passenger several times for no reason that he could ascertain. That was just what he witnessed, and the gossip about what could occur was much worse.

It’s reassuring to know that even after liberation some traditions are maintained.

Don: Perhaps the slap was part of the service. Those eastern european chicks are filthy animals.

Yobbo, there was a suspicion that the Aeroflot attendants might’ve been on steriods, such was their burly build. A slap might’ve stung a bit.

My friend also noticed their tendency to shout at passengers.

As with most in the travel industry he was a notorious freeloader, prepared even to take his life into his own hands at times to take advantage of a freebie or a cheap deal.

He flew with Air Lanka at a time of terrorism and hijacks (it occurred back then, too, when George was still working his way through detox clinics), and Indian Airlines domestic flights were then pretty hair-raising.

But he drew the line at Aeroflot and CAAC, even being prepared to break his own principles and actually pay for an alternative airline.

Maybe there is something to be said for competition. Wouldn’t have minded some of those experiences with East European chicks you hinted at, however.
