Comments boxes not working? You might be using crap software. Thanks to ace technical consultant boynton, I learn that the cause of the comments box thing being forbidden is that users are using Internet Explorer!
Oh, the shame!
Get Real. Get Firefox!
Of course, if you MUST use internet explorer, you can still access comments through the date stamp!
(Blimey I had all these people complaining about not being able to access comments, and it turned out they were using the wrong browser. I thought there was something wrong with the site!)
UPDATE- Yes, I know there is something wrong, I just do not know how to fix it.
Sorry to say this, Scott, but when a site (or part of it) can’t be accessed by IE (80-90% of your users?) then there is something wrong with IT.
In the meantime- I’ve added a title to the comments tag explaining things for the 90% (including those of us who did get Firefox but can’t break the IE habit)
Ermmm…I do use Firefox at home and I still can’t comment. I can open comments via the timestamp – they are laid out tantalisingly before me like an oasis in the desert, but any attempt to immerse myself in their glistening waters (typing ‘test’ in for preview for instance) is met with an “Achtung! Access Verboten on this server!” Here at work I’m also using Firefox and there’s no problem whatsoever. I dunno. Are you sure it’s not someting that I said?
test from Opera through timestamp – Comments doesn’t remember my info
test from Firefox through timestamp
comments displays error in Avant Browser. I’m posting through timestamp on Avant
test agin – using Konquerer on Linux now and comments comes up with error message – so it probably isnt JUST IE
FXH
FXH – Can you go directly to comments via Firefox?
oh well – it was a nice theory. I backed it up with experiences of 3 other users. Firefox works here anyway.
I’ve adjusted my Title to reflect provsional nature of these findings ;)
basic, though probably effective solution – change the comments tag so it points to the same address as the sidebar (ie to archives rather than comments.cgi)
comments works ok in Mozilla 1.3 on Linux no error message on accessing comments
I can access through comments in Opera, although it doesnt remember my info, so I need to go thru timestamp then it gets info, I can access comments thru FF but doesnt remember my info.
In Avant browser comments displays error, access ok thru timestamp. All above on MS XP.
Konquerer on Linux = comments error message but ok thru timestamp. Mozilla 1.3 on Linux works ok thru comments.
See the crazy thing is, I’ve not done anything- there must be a bug in the system that came in through Friday. I have a lot on my plate but on Thursday I might get a magnifying glass out and try and locate the problem.
I was going to say that anyone who can’t comment at all (most seem to be able to comment eventually by using a circuitous route) should comment to that effect. Then it struck me that there are significant challenges inherent in commenting when you can’t comment. So I won’t.
It’s all good in Netscape!
Works good on Zapp-Lang.
Forbidden as a pop-up in Mac OS X safari but fine with Firefox
It’s fine on firefox for me.
So who can tell me why my sidebar’s at the top in firefox (where it oughta be; thus the name) and down to buggery after the posts in IE?
Doesn’t work with Safari, but boynton’s tip does. Scott could you update your blogroll with my new address?
Works on safari for me.
Uninstall movable type…
Yobbo, that reminds me of a little parable about outsourcing. I bought a new Motorola phone last week. It worked wonderfully – as a video camera, text sender and camera. Unfortunately it didn’t work as a phone. When I rang the call centre (my assumption being I could be put through to a tech who would tell me if there was something wrong with the settings – it did work if I had the earpiece on) I was greeted with the remarkable information “that shouldn’t be happening” and then the advice repeated as a mantra:
“master reset, master reset, try master reset, master reset”
I took it back to the Telstra shop where I bought it and they gave me a new phone. In fairness to Telstra, their customer service was great. In fairness to Telstra, I think the shop was a franchise.
mark – the PDA model? what model. I am looking for a not too expensive PDA with folding real keyboard. Would be nice if it had a camera and phone.
I don’t think so, Francis – but I don’t know what PDA means. It’s a Motorola V535. Cost me $529.

testing….seems to work fine out of the RSS reader
Since I am often a teeny bit Pavlovian in my treatment of technology, I have discovered that
a) sometimes comments doesn’t work here but
b) it does if I simply repeat the exact same action.
Hard to type with all this birdseed on the keyboard.
Hey! Scott! You’re a genius!
You only just figured this out??
Geoff, re commenting when you can’t comment, my old ute had an intermittent fault whereby it wouldn’t start. The car electrician said, “Next time it won’t start, bring it down and I’ll have a look at it”
Geez, thanks, mate!
Mark: I wasn’t recommending a reinstall, but rather replacing it with the (far superior) WordPress.
I know yobbo, it was just a segue…
It’s not working with Mosiac.
