Left Right Out

Internet quizzes are always fun. Except for those pesky iq tests… Via internet quizzes, I first found out that I was 47% slutty, and that there was an 80% probability that I was a woman.

Courtesy of Alex in a comment on a Catallaxy thread, here’s a more serious internet quiz with what I think is a reasonable questionnaire (albeit a tad Americo-centric). Locate yourself on the Political Compass.

I’m a Left Libertarian and my scores were: Economic Left/Right: -8.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.74. That’s about right, I think… (Only the Dalai Lama comes close to me among famous figures. I don’t know whether he did the test, though…)

TROPPO CONTEST: The person who comes closest to Troppo faux centrism will win a mystery Troppo prize.

NB: Don and I plan to announce the mystery prizes soon. So get in there and finish Don’s Christmas story or answer my film quiz about Fafblog.

I got that link emailed to me a while ago. My scores:

Economic Left/Right: 1.62

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.18

It’s an interesting test – a bit more trustworthy than most of the internet quizzes out there. It has an interesting theory about modern politics, but I felt it still wasn’t very accurate. Some questions I honestly didn’t know how to answer, because I was unfamiliar with the terminology; others seemed to be loaded – aimed at getting a particular response. (ie, ‘Do you think that people with more money deserve better healthcare’?) Other questions which I think should have been asked were not – eg, ‘do you think that private or public funding is the better model for health, education, etc’.

Economic left/right – 6.75

Me and the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela.

I note that I also share an astrological sun sign with my fellow left Libertarians. I wonder how computing that in might fiddle things?

Economic Left/Right: -7.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.49

Puts me a tad south-west of Nelson Mandela and The Dalai Lama. Which is apropos as a few years back I went to the cricket with a bunch of mates wearing T-shirts with the theme of the many sides of Warnie. I was Dalai Lama Warnie honouring Shane’s contribution to spiritual matters.

And yes, there was a sleazy Warnie.

As I do every time someone mentions the Political Compass, I’ll point you towards Yobbo’s similar quiz: http://www.gravett.org/yobbo/quiz/quiz.htm

And to Tim Lambert at http://cgi.cse.unsw.edu.au/~lambert/cgi-bin/blog/2004/09#compass2, who has collected a heap of results on a chart.

Did this years ago. Did it again several months back and landed right in the middle, on the origin.

Do I win?

I dunno. First it told me to stop being funny, then branded me as a nilhilistic smartarse.

Then it showed me images of Ghandi and Castro, when I was primed to expect Groucho Marx and the Emperor Norton.

I collected blog results on a chart once. You can still see it thanks to the Wayback Machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20030820215325/http://mentalspace.ranters.net/stuff/blogmap/

I’ve done yobbo’s quiz. It seems I’m Franklin Roosevelt, which is nice.

“Your economic freedom index is 5, and your social freedom index is 18.”

But I have a problem with the economic freedom questions which I think are loaded. For instance

*Increase labour market regulations and controls and increase the power of trade unions
*Remove individual bargaining and employer control of wages, significantly increase minimum wage

The first policy step in each instance doesn’t necessarily imply the second.

For most of the economic questions, my position wasn’t an option…

David Tiley

That’s because you are one of those pesky individualists who have GOT ONTO THE INTERNET and ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO THINK.

Spreading suffering wherever you go..

I did the political compass one a while ago, does it have a question about astrology? Or is that another quiz? I didn’t really see the relevance if it to my politcal/social views.

Thanks, David.

Amanda, I think Zoe likes knowing people’s star signs. She found out that Chris Sheil is a Taurus:

http://backpagesblog.com/weblog/archives/000574.html

I’m an Aquarius for what it’s worth.

Zoe – I don’t know if you have a theory that starsigns are related to people’s politics?

Amanda
2024 years ago

Oh yes I know all about Zoe’s backwardness in this regard ;-)

I am an Orphiuchus. Can’t you tell?

I was refering to this question in the PolComp:

“Astrology accurately explains many things.”

Just thought it was an odd thing to include.

Mark Bahnisch
Mark Bahnisch

I knew you would be, Amanda!

I suspect the question might have something to do with whether one thinks in terms of scientific rationality.

Or maybe it’s got something to do with Nancy Reagan’s astrologer?

ps – anyone else want to join me in the slut test stakes? it’s a lot more fun than the political compass!

Caveat – it’s a tad sexist. Unsurprising, really…

Amanda
2024 years ago

But how would would strongly disagreeing or strongly agreeing that astrology explains many affect your spot on the axis? How does it relate to being libertarian or authoritarian or whatever?

The “Iconochasms” at PC is pretty fun too, if you are a sad bastard politics tragic anyway.

Political Compass test again shows I’m in lonely territory so close to the cross hairs that the deviation’s not worth worrying about.(one small square right, one down some months ago and now one left, one down now with what looks like a few new questions)That leaves you to judge the efficacy of the test or where you’re at compared to the centrist observa. MrsO is convinced I’m a raving RWDB of course.

You’re right, Observa. There are quite a few new questions since the last time I took the test. Here’s my latest results:

According to my big table containing 551 results (click on my name), Ben Hyde can win your contest, because he got exactly the same score as you (to two decimal places!).

You can add your results to my table if you are so inclined.

Seemed that you were choosing between two non mutually exclusive extremes most of the time. Too many times words like ‘Never” and “Always” appeared in the choices.

That’s the nature of the beast, I guess, James.

I’ve just done the taboo test. The poor cat!

“Your Moralising Quotient of 0.13 compares to an average Moralising Quotient of 0.29. This means that as far as the events depicted in the scenarios featured in this activity are concerned you are more permissive than average.

Your Interference Factor of 0.00 compares to an average Interference Factor of 0.20. This means that as far as the events depicted in the scenarios featured in this activity are concerned you are less likely to recommend societal interference in matters of moral wrongdoing, in the form of prevention or punishment, than average.

Your Universalising Factor of 0.00 compares to an average Universalising Factor of 0.37. This means you are less likely than average to see moral wrongdoing in universal terms – that is, without regard to prevailing cultural norms and social conventions (at least as far as the events depicted in the scenarios featured in this activity are concerned).”
