Not quite missing in action

Just popped by to wish everyone a Merry Christmas etc. Jen and I have been doing battle with swimming pool installation and assorted other home establishment tasks, while Telstra finally informed me the other day that we can’t get ADSL at our new home because it’s on a “rim” and is serviced by a “split pair” (whatever that means).

In the meantime I couldn’t blog from home, because I discovered that my PC doesn’t even have an internal dialup modem. Fortunately, Jen now has a new replacement laptop after a prolonged and tortuous battle with the insurance company, so occasional blogging may be possible while we’re on holidays “down south” from late on Christmas Day.

In the slightly longer term, there’s a company called Arafura Connect that expects to be able to offer wireless broadband to my area by fairly early in the New Year. The benefits will be wireless connectivity from anywhere in the house and garden, and much higher speeds than ADSL. The downside is that Arafura’s current price structure is considerably higher than ADSL, and with not overly-generous bandwidth allowances. But there really isn’t much choice if I want broadband.

It’s great to see Don, Scott, Mark et al still blogging away happily. I’ll be rejoining them with batteries recharged early in the New Year. I hope all of you have as restful and enjoyable a Christmas break as I’m planning (although whether mine actually pans out that way is another question, given that the project involves my making the acquaintance of Jen’s extended family and her doing the same with my in-laws).

There are options with rim connections. Try harassing Telstra over this. Senator Kate Lundy has been doing the ministers job and harassing Telstra over this, with some results.
