Sad Tidings

Frequent Troppo commenter and proprietrix of her own blog, yellowvinyl, who’s a friend of mine, rang me today to let me know that she has cancer. She asked me to pass on her apologies for being testy in comments threads, which I’m sure are wholly unnecessary in any case. She’s just posted about this on her livejournal site. Since yellow is a regular at Troppo, I’m sure all readers will join me in wishing her a full recovery.

Likewise from me. I’ve greatly appreciated her comments and I hope hers is not a too drawn out recovery. I had a bout of Cancer in my teens and was knocked down for many months.

That’s awful news, but it’s happened to a feisty, upbeat and life-seizing grrrl :)

I’m anticipating a positive outcome.

Thx everyone for yr kind words :) and thoughts and energy and prayers :)

Ken’s right – again is worrying. I had osteocarcoma (a bone cancer) when I was 14 which led to the amputation of one leg. that’s what it is this time too – in the other leg. fortunately the diagnosis has been relatively early – these cancers are fast spreading – and there are no secondary tumours. I’d been feeling listless and unwell for a while – but I put it down to overwork and too much partying… and my leg was very sore but that’s not so unusual when you’ve only got one. so I’m glad having been through all this once before motivated me to get it checked out. Osteocarcoma doesn’t generally respond well to chemo, and I’m still getting advice on treatment options (the treatment when I was a girl was basically amputation to get all the cells that might be problematic) and it sounds as if they might be able to excise the affected part of the bone, but there’s still a possibility that I’ll end up legless in the proper sense not in the sense that I regularly am on a Friday night in a club :( but I’m holding up reasonably well so far, though obviously feeling very unwell.

I’m also grateful that I have income insurance. when you work for yourself as I do there’s no sick leave…

James, I missed the OC this week – please distract me by filling me in on all the juicy goss!

oh no yellow! no wonder you were feeling listless!

The thing is I watched last week and this week in one sitting and I kind of forget what happened in which episode.

The new edgey chick who runs the funky live music venue, the Bait Shop kissed Seth a while back and they went out for ice cream together. Seth decided to ask her to the Snow Dance at school. Riot Grrrl knocked him back and he said “what about that kiss?” She kisses everybody, see? She kissed the delivery guy and then planted a very sexy kiss on a pretty barmaid. Very arresting it was too, and I’m sorry you missed it – just when you thought your week was shit.

Meanwhile Ryan asks out the other new chick, Lyndsey, who says No so Ryan and Marrisa (Woman’s Day says the actor who plays Marissa is down to 48kg from an obese 58kg)decide to go as friends. Meanwhile Summer asks Zach the senator’s son (yes unlike John Fogarty he actually IS a senators son – though the chances of Chris reading this drollery deep in here are remote) to the ball but Zach is getting cheesed over Summer’s ongoing obsesson with Seth even though theyve parted and knocks her back. So she tags along with Ryan and Marissa not knowing that Ryan told the rejected Seth that he could come too.

So All the crew are back together like old times albeit squabbling – which is also like old times as Marissa notes. Zac, the Senator’s son is alone and moping at the Bait Shop when Riot Grrl asks him why he is not at the school dance. Because his girlfriend is still obsessed with her ex that’s why. Well Riot Grrrl (who strikes me as your cup of tea if you don’t mind me saying so) tells him not to be a wimp and if he wants her he can fight for her. He tells her thanks he is going off to fight Seth Cohen. Inspired he races off and finds Summer and Seth sitting on a bench he decks Seth. Riot Grrrl arrives to care for Seth – she did not know until it was too late that it was Seth Zac was talking about and feels responsible.

Deep breathe…

Menawhile. Caleb has been caught paying off an council official by the DAs office and is deep doo doo. Sandy in breach of all laws goes and finds this official and asks what is going on. It isn’t bribery – Caleb had an affair 16 years ago and there was a child. He asks her to come clean to keep Caleb out of prison. She shows up at the Sandys house to tell him she will come forward and say it wasn’t bribery it was palimony when Lyndsey comes out of Ryan room (the pool house) and says “Mum, what are you doing here?”

Next week it’s Chrismakkah at the Cohen’s again and Seth is planning a big family celebration.

thank you James – you’ve made my Friday night :)

wasn’t there a Senator’s son in Young & the Restless once?

I tragically heart Summer though…

and thanks, Nabs :)

I shouldn’t have stayed up last night – am paying the price today!

I went to see the specialist yesterday to get the lowdown on what’s happening. the good news is that the range of treatments, survival rates, and strategies for avoiding amputation is much bigger than when I was 14 and went through this the last time round. the bad news (personally in terms of how I’ll feel) is that chemo is now thought to be effective – am looking at six to nine months of same. I might do a pre-emptive strike and go for the bald look now! half way through the chemo they operate. it’s at that point, depending on whether the tumour’s shrunk that they decide whether to excise part of the bone and replace it either with a bone graft or a prosthetic bone replacement or to amputate. if the latter is necessary, the location of the tumour means I’d likely get to keep my knee – which would be a big advantage in mobility options – not easy for a double above-knee amputee to walk on prosthetics. but hopefully it won’t come to that. at the moment, I’m in a wheelchair which I am not enjoying.

Good to hear, Kim, the outlook isn’t as bad as it could be. Chemo sounds horrible but if the result is to shrink the tumour, I’m sure you’ll be able to keep the end in sight.

yellow, great to hear the outlook isn’t the worst one, but so sorry to hear about you being stuck in a wheelchair and undergoing chemo.

Thx, Jason :) if circumstances had been different, I’d be dancing on Oxford St watching the Mardi Gras parade right now and I’d have had the chance to catch up with friends in Sydney :(

grrrr

oh well, I can take out my angst by whinging about wheelchair inaccessibility for a bit I guess!

yeah, yellow, ’tis a pity because I live just off Oxford St, can still hear the partying from where I am

Jason, yeah, it’s a thousand pities as I’m sure I’d have had a fab time in Sydney in lots of ways.
