On line resources

The whole of Sept 08 Quadrant. And you have to be a subscriber to look at a limited number of back numbers. Not long ago only selected items were on line in the current edition and there was open access to back numbers extended as far as 2002 or further. WTF?

Check out John Stone's piece on Aboriginal employment and the CDEP scheme. From acorns...

A joint appearance of Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton. Hilarious!

Quadrant: Self proclaimed leading general intellectual journal of ideas, literature, poetry and historical and political debate published in Australia. (see their own banner).

Check out the article entitled "Australian Rules Football as Secret Men's Business." Like miost politically partisan rants, there is often a tiny core of truth, at the centre of a tapestry of facts linked by half-facts and non-facts linked by a conspiracy theory. The end result in this case is truly embarrassing .Here are a few choice quotes:

For some years Australian rules football has been in the hands of feminist social engineers.
(Women) have bullied their way into sacred mens sites such as the Long Room at the MCG. Much of the newspaper journalism and media commentary has been taken over by women
Feminism is only interested in football as a display of its own power over men. In truth, feminism hates the game. It seeks to control the behaviour of men in the football community, by law, as an example to all men.
During the last thirty years or so maleness has been discriminated against as a matter of state policy and law. Boys have been starved of physical expression and development in almost all areas of education and behaviour, except football.

I don't always agree with what I read in Quadrant. In the past I often found myself saying "damn conservatives", this month I found myself saying "damn commies".

Being one of the very few "non-left" little magazines in the country means that Quadrant has to cater for a wide range of opinions, some of which will offend some of the readership.

I understand and that's fine. But I don't expect to read blatant lefty stuff in Quadrant.

Which piece is the problem? My copy has gone astray in the mail and I have only scanned the on-line contents. Of course economic illiteracy has always been equally prevalent among conservatives and radicals. Long before Robert Manne edited Q he announced in "The New Conservatism" that he knew nothing about economics but didn't think much of the New Right (meaning us). And (as an aside) I was not happy to (twice) hear Keith Windschuttle attribute his move from left to conservative to "growing up" or words to that effect. Not very illuminating!

Caroline Wilson and Christie Malthouse, I assume, or is Andrew Demetriou a crypto-feminist? Bizarre finds, Chris.

Huh. I thought I was joking.

Andrew Demetriou is an ideology-driven leftie who believes he is democratising football

Hmm I didn't know John Greenfield was a Quadrant contributor ...

I bought an issue of Quadrant once. It was crap. End of story. Actually the lefty equivalent magazines are also crap. I've never bought them but sometimes I read an article or two in Borders bookshop when I visit Melbourne. Unfortunately such magazines are full of opinionated piddle written by blinkered partisans.

But then again maybe I'm grumpy because I spent two hours in hospital yesterday after cutting my leg with my shiny new Made In Finland axe. Ouch! :)
