My particular problem at the moment is which chess clock app to download. There are oodles of them. I've also downloaded a business card reader, but where do I find out which of what is often many competing apps are the best ones?

The app store reviews usually work too.
The best chess app is 'Deep Green' by Cocoa Stuff. The premium version is perhaps a touch pricey at $10 compared to the competition, but they also have a free version so you can try before you buy. The app is very well coded though, probably one of the best apps out there - highly recommended.
