    Tricky all right, I can't even see it when the moves are sitting in front of me. Why doesn't the black pawn on G7 take the knight on F6 to remove the black king from check?

    It does. Then the white queen takes the black queen with check, is taken by the pawn and the bishop on e2 goes to h5 with checkmate.
